Actress Kelly McCreary has delivered some heartbreaking news to fans of Grey's Anatomy.

After a decade-long stint, McCreary's character Maggie Pierce is set to bid farewell to the hit medical drama. Viewers will have to brace themselves as the end of Pierce's story arc draws near, with her final appearance scheduled to air on April 13, smack dab in the middle of Grey's Anatomy Season 19, currently airing on ABC.

Maggie Pierce in Grey's Anatomy

McCreary has left an indelible mark on Grey's Anatomy fans as her character Maggie Pierce, a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, who joined the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital family in Season 9.

Over the years, Pierce has faced various personal and professional challenges, from navigating complicated family dynamics to juggling a burgeoning romance with an attending surgeon.

With McCreary announcing that the end of Pierce's story arc is imminent on Grey's Anatomy Season 19, it left fans to wonder how her character's journey will conclude.

"After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family," the actress said in an official statement. "Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey. I am excited for this next chapter, and what the future holds."

No Stranger To Exits

Grey's Anatomy has never shied away from developing intricate character arcs in its 400+ episode tenure. McCreary, in particular, played a pivotal role in the show's success, joining the cast as a much-needed cardiothoracic surgeon during a critical juncture in the hospital's story.

While unexpected departures no longer come as a shock to devoted fans, the exit of McCreary and lead actress Ellen Pompeo, who wrapped up her 19-season run earlier this year, is sure to leave a void. Although both actresses are set to make a comeback in future episodes this season, it appears that their time on the show is coming to a close.

Excitement is brewing amongst fans as the beloved character Addison Montgomery, played by Kate Walsh, makes a much-anticipated return in the upcoming episode titled Training Day.
