Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Location and Code Name Revealed

The release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife last year ended up becoming a success at the box office and it prompted Sony to greenlight a follow-up film which they confirmed recently at CinemaCon. We haven't heard many details about their plans for the sequel and now we have some new information regarding what we can expect on their next ghostbusting adventure.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, during the Ghostbusters Day event, Afterlife director and writer Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan revealed some details about their plans for the sequel. First, they confirmed that the next film will be set in Manhattan, the location of the original films. They also revealed that the code name for the follow-up will be "Firehouse" which is a reference to the headquarters of the original team.

"At the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home. And before anyone ever heard the title Afterlife, we called it Rust City. Which would not have made sense to anyone until they saw the movie. The code name for the next movie is ‘Firehouse,'" Reitman told the outlet.

Kenan added, "We’re writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel."

While the pair didn't provide more specific details regarding the plot, they did confirm that Ernie Hudson will be reprising his iconic role of Winston Zeddemore which was hinted at by the post-credits scene of Afterlife. "The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters," Reitman said.

The pair also shared that they were able to share their plans for the future of the franchise with Jason's father and original film director Ivan Reitman, who passed away in February and was thrilled with the direction where it is going.

"We talked about what we wanted to see happen to the Spengler family and even outside the Spengler family," the younger Reitman explained. "And he was so excited. He was just thrilled about where we wanted to go. And sitting there, telling him what we wanted to do with the story was a daunting responsibility, but his enthusiasm for it is what fuels us today."

The plans they have for the sequel sound exciting so far and it is great to hear that they already have ideas on where it is going. They also sound very passionate about the future of the franchise and appeal to a new generation of fans. We should be hearing more details about the project in the near future once they are heading closer to production.
