Reitman was known for directing some of the beloved iconic comedy films in the 80s and 90s such as Stripes, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Junior, and Dave. His directing career continued to the 21st century when he helmed the science-fiction comedy cult classic Evolution and the romantic comedy No Strings Attached. His last directorial work was the 2014 sports drama Draft Day starring Kevin Costner. He was set to direct the Twins sequel Triplets which was supposed to start filming this year.

He also served as producer for some of the well-known films such as Animal House, Space Jam, Up in the Air (where he earned an Oscar nomination), Beethoven, Old School, EuroTrip, Hotel for Dogs, and I Love You, Man.

But of course, Reitman's most iconic work in his career is the 1984 science-fiction comedy classic Ghostbusters which spawned a huge franchise with a 1989 sequel (which he also directed), a 2016 all-female reboot (which he served as one of the producers), and most recently the legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was directed by his son Jason Reitman, where he also served as one of the producers and it was the last work of his career before his death.

Several Hollywood figures took to Twitter to pay their tribute and respect to the late director including Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Feig (the director of 2016's Ghostbusters), Judd Apatow, Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, and many more.
