Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones with its eighth season in May 2019, fans have been eager to hear about updates on George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter book. The author has given multiple completion dates in the past year, but it seems like it could be official this time.

According to Martin's own Not A Blog, he promised that he'll finish the book by Summer of 2020. The author was invited by New Zealand to help him in finishing the highly-anticipated book. However, he did joke about how he fears New Zealand would distract him "entirely too much."

"But I tell you this - if I don't have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I'm done."
Based on his statement, it is expected that The Winds of Winter will come around July or August of this year. Martin did not mention any specific dates, but since Worldcon is set on July 29 to August 2, the months mentioned are a pretty safe bet.

Fans have very high hopes for the date that Martin has announced on his blog site. Considering that he has released his fifth book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series in 2011, it's safe to say that the fans are very excited and that they literally can't wait for the book.
