George R.R. Martin Hopes House of the Dragon Will Turn Game of Thrones into Star Wars or MCU-Type Franchise

House of the Dragon is the first of many Game of Thrones spin-offs so it is clear that HBO has big plans for the franchise. But how big is it going to be? George R.R. Martin has just expressed his hopes for the upcoming prequel, stating that he wants it to be as massive as Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

There was a time when Game of Thrones was the most-watched show on television but the popularity turned into infamy as people believed the final season was a major letdown. Still, that didn't slow down any plans for spin-off shows set in Westeros. The first one, House of the Dragon, will take us back hundreds of years to when the Targaryens rode dragons into battle.

Surely, a prequel series with more than just three dragons is an ambitious one and George R.R. Martin has shared his ambitions for House of the Dragon and the other spin-off shows.

“How many shows will make it to air? I don’t know, but I hope the answer will be several,” Martin told Wall Street Journal. “And we’ll have something akin to the Marvel or Star Wars model by the time it’s all settled.”

Big words from a big fan but it sounds like House of the Dragon will be as huge as we are expecting. Early reviews have been mostly positive (because who can resist scandals and dragons?) despite some negative remarks about the series having "too many Targaryens." Needless to say, we can't wait for the big premiere on Sunday.

House of the Dragon will star Paddy Considine, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith. The first episode is titled The Heirs of the Dragon and will premiere on HBO on Sunday, August 21, 2022.
