George Lucas was Told he would ‘Destroy’ Star Wars with Young Anakin Skywalker

While Star Wars is plenty interesting on its own, there are a lot of interesting anecdotes and stories surrounding the making of the franchise, and with Taschen's new book The Star Wars Archives: 1999–2005, it was revealed that the studio thought Lucas was going to ruin the franchise before he started work on the prequels.

As revealed in the book (via Polygon), 20th Century Fox was said to be excited when Lucas said the prequels would explore Anakin Skywalker turning into Darth Vader; but when he revealed that Anakin would be 10-years-old in the first film, Lucas was told, "You're going to destroy the franchise; you're going to destroy everything!"

In the end, Lucas did what he wanted, and The Phantom Menace still grossed over a billion dollars. Though the general consensus at the time was that the prequels were terrible, the movie was beloved by the franchise's intended audience—the kids. Now love for the prequels is being proclaimed by the adults in the fanbase who grew up with them; it's just terrible that the same people are behind the bashing of the new Sequel Trilogy which is intended for today's kids.

With a franchise as old and ever-evolving as Star Wars, you can always expect these ‘true fans' to have something to say about the content that comes out, but I personally believe it's essential to consider that Star Wars is not about a consistent lore or fanbase pandering; it's about the kids.

Star Wars may be taking a hiatus from the box office for now, but you can catch the second season of The Mandalorian now on Disney+.
