George Lucas Cut A “More Gruesome” Order 66 Sequence From Star Wars: Revenge of The Sith

Featuring the fall of the liberty, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith saw the issuance of Order 66, the top-secret order that identified all Jedi as traitors to the Republic and had them killed.

While seeing Jedi Nights like Aayla Secura and Plo Koon on the big screen was heartbreaking in itself, it turns out that Episode III was supposed to have an even "more gruesome" Jedi-killing sequence.

Speaking with fans during a panel at the FanX convention at Salt Lake City this weekend, Ian McDiarmid, the prequel trilogy actor who played Senator Palpatine, revealed that Revenge of the Sith had bloodier and grittier deaths prepared for the Jedi.

"I think it was a little more gruesome than you ended up seeing, you know. A lot of young potential Jedi ended up on the cutting room floor," McDiarmid told fans who attended the panel (via ComicBook.com).

While some might have enjoyed grittier death scenes, the actor says the toned down Jedi death sequence might have actually been a better idea knowing that the Star Wars prequel film might have been given a harsher rating.

Even with its toned-down death sequence, Episode III was given a PG-13 rating. Revenge of the Sith was the very first Star Wars film to receive a rating other than PG and if Lucas had gone with the darker and bloodier death scenes, than the movie would have probably been given a lower rating, limiting its audience.

Lucasfilm's next Star Wars movie, Episode IX, hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
