Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently addressed their potential return to the Star Wars franchise.

Years ago, the Emmy-winning duo was attached to spearhead a new trilogy of films in the Star Wars franchise. However, the plans were eventually scrapped altogether and they moved on to other projects.

Some fans are still wondering whether the duo would still be interested in rejoining the franchise or if it is out of the realm of possibility since they are busy with various projects such as the new Netflix series 3 Body Problem.

In an interview with the Inside Total Film podcast, Benioff and Weiss were asked whether they were interested in returning to the Star Wars franchise years after they departed Lucasfilm.

They revealed that they have no intention at all to work on a Star Wars project again due to the lack of independence in working on an established franchise.

"No, I don't think so. I think when you've got a franchise that's already so well established, like Star Wars or James Bond or so forth," Benioff said.

"I think there's less independence when you come in to try to tell a story that you want to tell and so I think what Dan [Weiss] and I have learned is that it's more fun for us to start something afresh."

He added, "Obviously, we're coming in on the shoulders of [3 Body Problem author Liu Cixin] here, he's the one who created these novels and everything but because we're the ones adapting them, at least for the English language. We have a lot of flexibility in terms of the story we want to tell and that's a lot more fun for us than the other version."

It looks like fans no longer have to expect any involvement from the Game of Thrones showrunners in the Star Wars franchise at all.

Benioff's comments were understandable since they don't want to be beholden to a franchise that they didn't establish themselves and they would rather create their own universe where they have full control of its direction.

For now, fans can look forward to the various Star Wars projects that are currently in development by different talented writers and directors that are attached.
