HBO may have always been the home of Game of Thrones, but for its eighth and final season showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss thought of taking the series somewhere else.
Entertainment Weekly has the scoop on the latest season of Game of Thrones, and in an interview with the publication, Benioff and Weiss revealed that they originally believed the only way to give season 8 the blowout it deserved was to turn the show into a series of films that would each receive a theatrical release.
According to the publication, the showrunners wanted to turn the final season into three separate films, each entry running at two hours on the big screen.
"It's what we're working towards in a perfect world," said Weiss. "We end up with an epic fantasy story but with the level of familiarity and investment in the characters that are normally impossible in a two-hour movie."
However, the showrunners didn't have the budget to bring their vision to life. So instead of turning Game of Thrones eighth and final season into a movie series, the team scaled-back and turned the final series of episodes into the extravaganza that fans were hoping for. While HBO didn't have enough for a film trilogy, they certainly had a pretty great budget to turn the series into a "summer tentpole-size spectacle."
With $15 million for each episode in a shorter season, Weiss and Benioff have all the support they need to turn the send-off into a bloody bonanza.
Game of Thrones season 8 premieres late 2019.
