Game Freak Claims That Pokemon Sword & Shield Isn't Re-Using 3DS Character Models

Pokemon Sword & Shield are the next mainline games of the series and are the first official entries coming to the Nintendo Switch. However, the two games have been embroiled by a bit of controversy when it was announced that the National Pokedex would not be coming back. This was supposedly done to improve character models and animations, though the latter has been criticized they still look like regular Pokemon games.

Despite similarities to the 3DS titles, an interview with Famitsu (translated by a fan on Reddit) revealed that Game Freak, in fact, did not reuse 3DS assets. There actually was an attempt to do this but the developers confirmed that everything was built from scratch. The Dynamax Pokemon feature is also built from scratch and doesn't use anything from the 3DS.

This won't please a lot of fans since the two games still look simple animations akin to the 3DS titles but calling them lazy doesn't seem to ring true. Sure, the animations could look a lot better but this is a Pokemon game and it's clear that there will be more new features for fans to like. Plus, the last time Game Freak changed things dramatically, it was with Sun and Moon, which got great reviews but had a mixed reception with fans.

If they want to, fans can pick up Pokemon Sword & Shield for the Nintendo Switch on November 15.
