Marvel continues to hype up X-Men: Red as a must-read title. Fans were intrigued when it was revealed that this would be a new team lead by Jean Grey after the events of Phoenix Resurrection. Then things got more interesting when Nightcrawler's glorious beard was shown. Now, we know that fan-favorite X-Man Gambit will be joining the group in the third issue of the series.
Gambit's profile has risen a bit lately, appearing in Astonishing X-Men and the second arc of X-Men: Gold. He will also be in the Rogue and Gambit mini-series coming out soon, so the character has been more relevant than ever. This might have to do with the upcoming film starring Channing Tatum but there's no doubt that fans of the character are pleased with his resurgence thus far.
Here's what series editor Mark Paniccia had to say about the reveal:
"Things have heated up with attacks on mutants across the globe. We know that one of the X-Men's most powerful villains is behind the chaos, but will Jean, Nightcrawler, All-New Wolverine and Honey Badger have a chance to stop the next deadly wave? A favorite Cajun mutant might be able to tip the scales in their favor… but at what cost?"
Gambit will be on the cover of X-Men: Red #3 and it was once again done by Travis Charest. Unlike Nightcrawler, who rocked a whole new look, Gambit's classic design is mostly kept intact. It also looks like the character will be hard to trust since his involvement comes with a cost, at least according to the press release.
Aside from Gambit, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler, the group will also consist of All-New Wolverine, Honey Badger, Namor, Wakandan Mutant Gentle, and brand-new character Trinary. Marvel is also teasing one more fan-favorite who will be joining the group:
"We've also got one more fan-favorite hero joining the team in this first arc. As the threat level escalates, Jean needs to build a highly specialized team…not just those she trusts, but allies who can survive the oncoming storm."
X-Men: Red #1 comes out in February. Gambit will join the group in X-Men: Red #3, which comes out in April.
