The Legendary Hero Sword's Origin in Frieren

According to legend, the hero sword is bestowed by an unnamed goddess on the true hero to defeat the Demon King.

The person who can lift the hero sword from the ground will be hailed as the true hero, and those who fail to do it will not be acknowledged, that is until Himmel appears.

Like most people, Stark believed that Himmel pulled the hero sword. After all, Himmel has always been treated as the people’s hero after he managed to take down the Demon King 80 years ago.

Himmel has achieved what a true hero should accomplish, and no one has ever questioned his authenticity due to his incredible feat.

However, Frieren reveals the true story behind Himmel and his connection with the legendary hero sword, which is in contrast with Stark’s story.

She tells everyone how Himmel failed to pull the legendary sword from the ground, no matter how many times and how many methods he tried.

Of course, this was such a shocking revelation, since most people believed that Himmel wielded the hero sword all this time.

In addition, Frieren also reveals that what Himmel had was only a knock-off or a replica that had been given to him by a peddler whom he saved years ago.

Even so, Frieren considers Himmel a true hero, with or without the legendary hero sword. She praises Himmel’s positive attitude toward his failure to acquire the hero sword and how he turned his fake sword into a real one.

Himmel might not be the chosen one, but he continued his mission for the sake of humanity. What matters is the great results Himmel gave to the people, which reflect how he was remembered for the longest time.

There are quite a lot of theories about the hero sword in Frieren, one of which is that Stark will be the chosen one who can lift it.

At some point in the series, Stark will take up the challenge of pulling the hero sword from the ground to help defeat an even bigger calamity, possibly more powerful than the Demon King.

Besides, the narrative behind Stark is building him to be a powerful warrior, one who can stand on his own two feet and fight for his people.

Others believe that Frieren will pull the sword, even though she’s not a warrior. Her immense mana will be helpful in taking the sword out; at least that’s what we’ve seen from discussions online.

Meanwhile, some argue that the legendary sword was used by the Hero of the South even though he died in the process.

The Hero of the South was a dual swordsman who was powerful enough to defeat four of the Demon King’s eight most powerful generals but failed to take them all down.

In another theory, some speculate that a new character will be introduced and he will be the chosen hero that a lot of fans are waiting to come out to this day.

Overall, no one has ever lifted the hero sword in Frieren, and there will only be more speculations and assumptions in the future as long as the manga has yet to introduce the chosen one to the premise.
