The destruction of the star bridge

The end of Foundation Season 1 left us on a time skip, from which we can safely assume that Foundation Season 2 will take place at least 138 years after the events that occurred in the first season. Through clones, simulations, and cryosleep, we will still see the same characters from the first season appear in Season 2. One of these characters is the immortal robot Demerzel who goes through an existential crisis.

Fans may turn to the books to try and predict the plot of the second season, but the Foundation series has deviated significantly from the books by the end of season 1. However, we can assess the two major cliffhangers from season 1 to anticipate the story of Foundation Season 2.

*Season 1 spoilers ahead*

By the end of Foundation Season 1, we now know that the current rulers of the Empire are identical clones of Cleon I. This information was revealed when Eto Demerzel killed the present Brother Dawn because of genetic differences that made him 'impure.' Later on, we find out that all of the clones are genetically unique from Cleon I because an anti-Empire group altered the genetic make up Cleon I host body.

The other cliffhanger from Season 1 was the lineage of Salvor Hardin. We learn by Season 1, Episode 10 that Salvor is the daughter of Gaal Dornick, and they meet 138 years in the future. Gaal froze her embryo in Episode 2, and the embryo grew up to be Salvor a hundred years later. Both Gaal and Salvor have had their own share of time traveling, which is the only reason they get to meet in the first place.

In an interview, Foundation Season 2 showrunner David S. Goyer talks about how these shockers can affect the events of Season 2.

Part of the fun of the show moving forward we'll be seeing how different the various Cleons are. It's part of the jazz that we're playing with Terrence, Cassian and Lee because, even though they're the same actors, some of the characters are going to be very different. One of the things that's exciting about this monkey wrench, that's thrown into the Genetic Empire, is what does that do when you introduce chaos into that system?

In a separate interview, Goyer also marveled at the possibilities that time-travel presented to the story of Gaal and Salvor:

The story of Gaal and Salvor… I would say the closest analogy would be if someone gave up a child at birth and didn't even know what happened to them. And then one day that adult child knocks on their door and says, 'Hey, mom'. What's a little different is that, at least biologically, Salvor's a few years older than Gaal, which is one of the fun things that you can only do in science fiction. I think Salvor's about 26 or 27 years old, and Gaal is only about 23 years old, 22 years old.
