He may be busy with his latest work Tenmaku Cinema, but that hasn’t stopped Food Wars! co-creator Shun Saeki from recreating an iconic Dragon Ball cover art for the series’ 40th anniversary.

While Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary is well over a year away, the lead-up to the big event began back in 2021 with the start of the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project.

Here, renowned manga artists recreate iconic Dragon Ball volume covers in their own art styles.

Specifically, the project began back in August 2021 with a tribute by Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto. Since then, a new illustration by another manga artist has been released every month.

The concept for this project is that one new illustration will be released every month in the lead-up to November 2024 – the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball. This means 40 volume cover recreations will be released by that point.

Since the gallery began, renowned manga artists such as Tite Kubo (Bleach), Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), and Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) have contributed their talents to the project.

In the last few months, we’ve also seen other popular contemporary manga artists contribute their own illustrations.

Previously, Dr. Stone illustrator Boichi recreated the Dragon Ball Volume 26 cover.

Before Boichi, The Promised Neverland’s artist Posuka Demizu shared an illustration of Volume 22’s cover featuring Goku, Krillin, and a young Gohan.

Food Wars! Illustrator Shun Saeki Is the Next Artist to Contribute

Now, the latest entry in the gallery project is being shared online, and it’s made by Shun Saeki, the illustrator of Food Wars! and the new series Tenmaku Cinema.

Specifically, Saeki’s illustration is a recreation of the Dragon Ball Volume 10 cover which features Bulma in her Wild Rider Suit as well as a young Goku in the background.

While Saeki’s artwork keeps the layout similar, the illustration combines the two characters into one scenario.

He also draws them in a style that looks a lot like his Food Wars! characters.

Despite the noticeable change in style, fans loved Saeki’s take on Dragon Ball, enough that some even hoped that he will make a doujin for the series in the future.

That likely won’t happen though given that Saeki is busy right now with Tenmaku Cinema as it continues serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump.
