In the first episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, the Usher family were on trial for the wrongdoings of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals.

Assistant US attorney C. Auguste Dupin argues that Fortunato has been engaging in misleading marketing practices, with them claiming that their products are safe and effective while destroying evidence that they are not.

Dupin emphasizes that in 40 years, the Usher family has not faced one indictment or charge. However, he says that the outcome of the trial will be different because everyone will hear from one of the Ushers.

Dupin then reveals that he’s been in contact with an informant from within the inner circle and that this informant is someone close to the family’s crimes.

After the trial, Roderick calls a family dinner, including spouses. They were all forced to sign an NDA. Roderick also offered 50 million dollars to the “lucky Usher” who figures out who’s the informant.

But that family dinner was the last time Roderick saw them all together, and some of them, the last time he saw alive. It seems that the deaths of the Usher children were tied to the fact that there is possibly an informant among them.

Dupin even asks Roderick if he’s implying that he’s somehow responsible, even indirectly, for the series of deaths “because of the informant thing.” Later on, Roderick finds out about the truth regarding the informant.

There was never an informant in The Fall of the House of Usher. This was just a lie made up by Dupin.

Dupin was a man of honesty, and so Roderick was impressed by his move, thinking that Dupin didn’t have it in him because of his principles.

But in order to win against the Ushers, Dupin decided to play dirty just like them. He figured that pointing at the kids would stir all of them up and pit them against each other.

Dupin, however, did not expect that the Usher children would start dying, and so he tells Roderick that he should not have pointed at the kids.

But the deaths of the Usher children were not Dupin’s fault in the first place, as we learn in the finale that Roderick and Madeline made a deal with Verna that sealed all their fates.
