Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Why Her? scored people’s attention because of their courtroom plotlines. But one of them outshined the other recently.

K-drama fans have been enjoying courtroom dramas recently due to the recent releases of Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Why Her?.

The latter premiered on June 3 on SBS TV and immediately became the center of people’s attention by having 10 percent viewership ratings in two weeks. It ended with its last episode hitting a 10.7 percent rating.

A month later, Extraordinary Attorney Woo arrived. Unlike Why Her?, the ENA series only started with a 0.9 percent. However, the number immediately skyrocketed to 13 percent within four weeks, surpassing the first courtroom drama.

With that, several culture critics chose one out of two dramas and explained why it became a fan favorite.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo VS Why Her?: Which K-Drama Won?

Speaking with Korea JoongAng Daily, culture critics explained why Extraordinary Attorney Woo managed to surpass Why Her?, making Woo Young Woo shine brighter than Park Eun Bin.

According to culture critic Jeong Deok Hyun, the “difference of sincerity” between the characters made the viewers chose Woo Young Woo instead.

“At the beginning, Soo-jae also had that. She was a representation of a problematic character in today’s generation, but that got somewhat toned down as romance and the secrets behind her birth entered the mix. On the other hand, ‘Extraordinary’ continues to push forward with what it aimed to do: to highlight social minorities and expand on their narratives through Young-woo,” the critic said.

Meanwhile, another culture critic Lee Young Mi explained why Extraordinary Attorney Woo’s individual stories look more appealing instead of Why Her? plotline of focusing on its main character instead.

Lee Young Mi added that people already got tired of seeing and watching revenge stories of the main protagonist against powerful elites.

With that, Extraordinary Attorney Woo offered a more appealing story by presenting cases and stories about Woo Young Woo’s clients instead of showing the main character’s “revenge” plot against those who bullied her.

For the culture critic, the drama became the representation of satisfying the viewers’ desire to see the “good” way of winning.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo Continues To Bring Special Plot Twists

In one of the recent episodes of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Min Woo offered a plot twist that made the characters “fit the times of contemporary society.”

Korean literature at Chungnam National University Yoon Seok Jin said that Min Woo made viewers think about what “just” means.

“The game isn’t fair. Woo Young-woo always wins over us, but we cannot be aggressive towards her. Woo Young-woo isn’t the underdog, she’s the victor here,’ the professor said.

The fact that it also highlights what people with disabilities can do, Yoon Seok Jin said that Woo Young Woo’s character might lead to change in society as it brings social awareness about autism.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo will continue to air until its last episode on August 18.
