We finally know what it takes to defeat Tanjiro Kamado… an Eva unit!
In its second week, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time brought its total ticket sales up to over 3 million (3,222,873 to be exact) which raised its box office total up to just over $45 million USD. Naturally, the film was #1 at the box office for the second week in a row. As a reminder, the last film in the franchise which was released in 2012 earned a grand total of about $48.7 million USD, so the latest movie has already almost topped that in a matter of two weeks.
This is the "final" movie of the franchise and has been a highly anticipated title ever since they released the last movie in the early part of the last decade. It hasn't been an easy journey for this movie, however, as the creator and director Hideaki Anno spoke candidly in 2015 regarding the depression he fell into back in 2015 which included the phrase "Thanks to my wife and friends, I was able to remain in this world," which was a startling reminder of the fragile person who is behind one of the most treasured pieces of anime history.
As I've stated previously, I was not a fan of the Evangelion television series when I first watched it. I'm not sure why it never sat well with me at the time, but I'm definitely looking forward to the day when I'm able to re-watch it and try it again with fresh, adult eyes that have been through more life experiences.
Regardless of how you might feel about Evangelion, it's left an indelible legacy behind it that has inspired countless creators around the world from many countries and from all walks of life, and that is undeniable. Maybe someday, something else will come along that will leave an impact as large as Evangelion has, and I'm hoping that I see that happen within my lifetime.
