Eternals Star Wants To Become A DC Hero Despite DC Shakeup

The future of the DC Universe may remain uncertain under James Gunn and Peter Safran, however, this doesn’t seem to stop certain Marvel actors from expressing their interest to be cast in the franchise. One of them happens to be Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Kingo in the Marvel film, and in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Recently making an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz, the actor and Oscar-nominated screenwriter touches upon his interest in taking a shot at one of DC’s “weirdest” unknown heroes.

“I’d love to tackle something — do you know DC comics?” Nanjiani said, further expounding the DC hero he would want to play the role in, “[Do] you know who Ambush Bug is? Nope, okay. Well, I want to do an Ambush Bug movie… he’s like this news reporter guy. He’s weird.”

Ambush Bug, aka Irwin Schwab, is a DC villain who carries miniature robot bugs that helped him teleport from places to places. The DC “villain” has also been noted to be suffering from mental problems that hinder his understanding of the difference between reality and fantasy, which indicates that though he sees himself as a hero, he isn’t seen as such by the DC heroes. Ambush Bug has been compared to Deadpool due to their similarities in their awareness of being in a comic book / superhero film.

Nanjiani emphasizes that he would really rather be Ambush Bug than Superman: “It’s because there’s no pressure on it, you know? If I do Superman, everybody’s got a different idea of Superman and if it doesn’t match up, they’re upset. Ambush Bug — nobody cares about it.”

Unfortunately, Ambush Bug doesn’t seem to be on James Gunn’s list, for now. It is possible that since Gunn is restructuring the DC, he could get some more ideas, seeing as he is also an avid comic reader, especially since Ambush Bug later on joins Amanda Waller on the Task Force X in the Suicide Squad #7 comics.

Meanwhile, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
