Maeve has been a moving force in the hit series on Netflix, and should it be renewed as Sex Education Season 5, unfortunately, Emma Mackey has already spoken and she would not be returning after the end of the fourth installment of the show.
Prior the start of the production of Sex Education Season 4, many of the beloved characters are already departing and would not be in the fourth installment of the hit series. However, if it would be renewed for Season 5, its main star, Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, would not be returning.
Emma Mackey confirmed that she would not return for Sex Education Season 5 and has already bid her farewell to her character in an interview with RadioTimes saying, “Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
In the same interview, Emma Mackey also revealed that everyone will not be seeing Maeve as consistently as in previous seasons, “It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently.”
Mackey added, "We’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”

Other than Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa also confirmed that he would not be returning for Sex Education Season 5 as well on an Instagram post where he shared, “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”
Sex Education Season 4 is expected to follow the events of the end of Season 3 where Moordale Secondary School is now under a new management after being sold to developers and the students would have to look for another school by the term's end.
As for Maeve's character, Maeve and Otis are on the edge as Maeve leaves for the US to study after she gets into a program fit for her writing prowess while Otis is developing a relationship with Ruby who may just be in love with him already.
Other stories that Sex Education Season 4 is set to follow are the following: Eric breaks up with Adam and their relationship remains in unstable waters, Jackson and Cal decided that it'd be best for them to remain friends, and the biggest questions is the father of Joy as it may not be Jakob who fathered Jean's child.
