Emergency Declaration went through hardships before it was scheduled to premiere this month.

Emergency Declaration is an upcoming 2022 film that follows the stories of people in a flight whose lives have been bombarded with terrorist threats. Originally, it premiered at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in July 2021 and was selected for the Out of Competition section.

It was scheduled to be released in January 2022, but it got postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After a long wait, it will finally hit the theaters this summer. With that, Lee Byung Hun took a look back at the issues the film faced and why, one of which was a blessing in disguise.

Emergency Declaration’s Postponement Has Positive Effect

In the upcoming film, Lee Byung Hun plays the role of Jae Hyuk, Su Min’s father. His daughter suffers from eczema, and he overcomes his phobia of planes to get treatment for his child.

Speaking about the delay in its release, the actor said that the postponement was a blessing in disguise as the film received more approvals since it would be aired amid the pandemic.

“Although this wasn’t intentional, as we passed through the pandemic, I figured that this was a story people living in today’s generation could more easily immerse into while watching. That’s why I think the response was better from those who watched the movie,” he told Sports Chosun.

Lee Byung Hun also spoke highly about his action scenes, hinting at the increasing tension in the movie. He added that he felt that adrenaline while reading the script for the first time.

Lee Byung Hun Suffered From Panic Disorder

His Emergency Declaration character struggled with a panic disorder because of the issue in the film. Fortunately, he experienced how it felt like to have an episode, and it helped him do his role smoothly.

Lee Byung Hun recalled that he suffered from the disorder when he was 25 or 26 years old.

“The first time I experienced panic disorder was when I got on the plane to go to the United States after I finished [filming] the 1997 SBS drama ‘Beautiful My Lady.’ My memory from then is so vivid. I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to die here.’ That memory was so shocking,” he detailed.

The plane staff reportedly made an announcement, asking the passengers if there were any doctors on board. Thankfully, he made it alive in the US.

Initially, he could not talk about it. But that particular incident just helped him portray his role even better now.
