Pompeo will reportedly play the fan-favorite character Meredith Grey for eight episodes only. Usually, every season has 20-23 episodes, suggesting that she will only show up one-third of the entire season. Pompeo reportedly has a new series, which she stars in and executive produces on Hulu.

The report immediately prompts the netizens to speculate that she's about to leave the series.

Ellen Pompeo Has Wanted To End Grey's Anatomy After Season 18

Pompeo has played Meredith in the last 16 years. The actress has been open about her interest in bidding goodbye to the series. She even wanted it to end after Season 18.

"I've been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end," Pompeo told Insider in December last year. "I feel like I'm the super naive one who keeps saying, 'But what's the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?' And everyone's like, 'Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.'"

Since many love the show, including the young people in the medical field, she decided to change her approach. Pompeo said she wanted the show to survive without her.

"t’s inspired so many generations of healthcare workers, so, I think for for the young people, it’s a really good piece of content and we’re going to try to keep it going for the young people, not necessarily with me, but keep it going beyond me,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

Pompeo accepted a new series with Hulu. According to Express, it's her first lead role away from ABC's Grey's Anatomy after nearly 20 years.

Her Hulu series was referred to as Untitled Orphan Project, TV Line reported. It has a similar plot to the horror movie Orphan but is inspired by a true story of a Midwestern couple who adopts an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. They reportedly raise her alongside their three biological children, only to realize later that she's not who she says she is.

As they question her story, they will be confronted with more difficult questions about the length they are willing to go to defend themselves, fall into battles in the tabloids and courtroom and even face a marital crisis.
