EA Drastically Reduces Star Wars: Battlefront II’s Hero Cost After Overwhelming Negative Fan Response

Star Wars Battlefront II might be scheduled to release this Friday, but there's been a riot going on about by EA DICE's system of unlocking characters. EA Access gamers have been able to try out the Star Wars Battlefront sequel on a free trial run since Friday last week, and players have been finding trouble unlocking the game's heroes and villains, discovering that it could take almost 40 hours to unlock a single hero in Battlefront II.

EA wrote a response to gamer's reactions on Reddit, but the publisher's explanation about its new system of earning credits didn't fare so well amongst netizens, becoming one of the most down-voted post amongst fans.

Now the publisher's posted a new response on its blog, saying that it's updated the price of unlocking heroes so that it won't take gamers forever to get Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. EA also noted that it would be hosting an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit on Wednseday, saying that it would answer a lot of the concers fans were having about Star Wars Battlefront II.

"Listening, and providing choices in how you play, will always be our principle with Star WarsBattlefront II. We want to ensure the game is balanced and fun both today and for years into the future," the team explained.

Making games great comes from regular tuning. As one example, today we're making a substantial change based on what we've seen during the Play First trial. There's been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes, especially Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. We used data from the beta to help set those levels, but it's clear that more changes were needed.

So, we're reducing the amount of credits needed to unlock the top heroes by 75 percent. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits. Based on what we've seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players.

It's a big change, and it's one we can make quickly. It will be live today, with an update that is getting loaded into the game."

EA mustn't have liked the way gamers hated gamer's response to its post on Reddit, and while lowering the credit prices might not seem enough of a change, it's great to see how the publication is quick to take action. Also, there's an upcoming AMA, so gamers have a chance to air out all of their concerns.

Star Wars Battlefront II releases on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC this Friday, November 17, 2017.
