EA Cancels Open-World Star Wars Game for Smaller-Scale Project

EA's usage of the Star Wars license has been pretty controversial, with the company releasing the unremarkable Star Wars Battlefront and the good-after-many-updates Star Wars Battlefront II. Fans are hoping that the mysterious Jedi Fallen Order game is a breath of fresh air, though its lackluster announcement during EA's press conference in last year's E3 did not help things at all.

If that wasn't troubling enough, reports have come in about EA canceling an open-world Star Wars game that was developed by EA Vancouver. According to Kotaku, this was the game EA Vancouver inherited from the now-defunct Visceral Games, which was originally a linear action game from the director of Uncharted. This was soon rebooted into an open-world game, though that seems to be canceled too.

Granted, EA never officially unveiled the game, only mentioning it sometime after Visceral was shut down. Still, an open-world Star Wars title sounds awesome and it's a shame that we won't be seeing it anytime soon.

People involved in the project told Kotaku that EA needed a new Star Wars game for next-gen consoles after the PS4 and Xbox One, hence the hasty cancelation of this open-world title. It seems like this game is, once again, being restructured into something smaller, which is what Visceral was doing in the first place. Funny how things work out.

This smaller Star Wars game will reportedly come out in late 2020. To EA's credit, the sources that spoke with Kotaku claim that no one was let go when the game was canceled. The team is also hoping that EA resumes work on the open-world game after the smaller-scale project comes out.

Star Wars Battlefront II is available now, while Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order comes out later this year.
