Dungeons & Dragons: Here's How Xenk Yandar is Connected on Szass Tam in Honor Among Thieves

One of the most interesting things we learned in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been the unexpected connection between the paladin Xenk Yandar and the legendary Red Wizard Szass Tam. But does the connection still exist by the time we meet Xenk in the film? Producer Jeremy Latcham has addressed the possibility that Xenk is still affected by his past.

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, it is revealed that Xenk Yandar was present when Szass Tam turned the people of Thay into an undead army. However, he managed to escape and has now aged slower than other humans.

But is Xenk still affected by Szass Tam's spell? Jeremy Latcham told Comicbook.com that this isn't necessarily the case.

"We just wanted to have a kid that could represent that all Thayans weren't bad," the producer said of Xenk's backstory. "I think it's one of the things that the lore does sometimes is they just say, 'This race is bad.' And we didn't love the concept that all the Thayans are bad. So we liked the idea of having Xenk as almost a half-Thayan."

"We wanted him to be half-dead, which is not really a thing in the lore," Latcham continued. "And so we wondered how do we skirt around this and say he escaped the procedure, but not fully untouched? And he's got Thayan in him, and he's been through part of this beckoning death spell. But he survived it. That's why he's got the sigil burned into his forehead, but he was not possessed entirely by the spell."

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant. The film also features a cameo from Bradley Cooper who plays Holga's halfling ex-husband. It is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
