Dune: Messiah, the planned third installment in the Dune trilogy, is officially in development at Legendary Pictures.

The exciting news comes as Dune: Part Two became a massive success both critically and financially. It already has a worldwide gross of more than $600 million and is considered to be one of the best films this year.

Director Denis Villeneuve was planning a trilogy for the Dune film series with the second book Dune Messiah being the source material for the third installment. Fortunately, it looks like it is becoming a reality.

Deadline revealed that Dune: Messiah is officially in development at Legendary Pictures with Villeneuve back to direct. It will serve as the conclusion of the Dune trilogy.

The confirmation came as it was reported that Legendary acquired the rights for the film adaptation of the non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario, which Villeneuve will direct after he completes Dune: Messiah.

Considering the massive box office success of the second film, it's not surprising at this point to learn that a third installment is in development and we've heard that Villeneuve was already working on a script.

However, considering that the story is supposedly set around 12 years after the events of the second film, it might take a while before we see it happen and they could wait for Chalamet to grow a few years older first.

For now, fans should look forward to the upcoming prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, which is currently scheduled to air on Max later this year. It will be an avenue for them to learn more about the Dune mythology.

Dune: Part Two is still showing in theaters everywhere.
