Stilgar's Journey in Dune: Part 2
Stilgar became the champion for Paul Atreides' ascendency to becoming the ruler as he believed that he was what the prophecy was referring to regarding the savior of Arrakis.
During the first film, he was hesitant when Paul and Lady Jessica were asking for the Fremen's help after the Harkonnens' ambush attack on the House of Atreides.
However, as he spent more time with Paul and Lady Jessica, he started to realize that they might be the mother and son from the "Outer World" that would bring prosperity to Arrakis according to a prophecy.
As Paul started to embrace the ways of the Fremen such as learning their language, riding a sandworm, and helping them on their raid on the Harkonnen spice harvesters, Stilgar and the Fremen developed a respect for him.
Eventually, Stilgar fully believed that Paul was indeed the messiah that the Fremen had been looking for. He also did not back down when the Southern Fremen leaders wanted Paul to challenge his leadership.
He officially recognized Paul as the "Lisan al Gaib" and his faith in him was unshakeable no matter what since then.
Does Stilgar Betray Paul?
Throughout the events of Dune: Part 2, Stilgar does NOT betray Paul at all as he retains his fanaticism toward the Muad'Dib until the very end of the film.
Some audiences would even argue that he was complicit in Paul's ascendency to becoming the savior of Arrakis since he convinced most of the Fremen that he was the messiah that they'd been looking for.
It is clear throughout the events of the film that Stilgar has unwavering loyalty to Paul and it will remain when they continue the story in the potential third film Dune Messiah.
