Dune Dominates the 94th Academy Awards With Six Wins

The 94th Academy Awards finally happened last night. While everyone is talking about the controversial altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock that happened in the middle of the ceremony, it was still a great night for some of the films that were nominated. Apple TV+'s CODA managed to win Best Picture becoming the first streaming film to do so. It also garnered wins in Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur sweeping all of its categories.

The science-fiction epic Dune dominated the ceremony as it managed to earn the most awards of the night with six wins including Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. It garnered all those wins out of the 10 nominations that it received this year despite its director Denis Villeneuve being missing in the Best Director category.

The winners ended up being mostly predictable as there were only very few upsets, but most of it went to what most pundits and journalists had been predicting for the past week. Obviously, it is the biggest night for Dune and it just shows how the film is such a huge filmmaking achievement and we might expect it to dominate the Oscars again once Dune: Part Two is in competition (assuming that it will be as great as the first film).

It is unfortunate that the winners were overshadowed by the Smith-Rock controversy which will definitely dominate the news cycle for the next few days and when we look back at the ceremony this year in the future, we might remember it more than the winners. Despite that, it is still worth celebrating because of the wonderful films that won and it just shows that we really had a great year in movies last year.
