Duncan Jones Reveals Warcraft Trilogy Almost Pit Thrall Against Gul'Dan

It has been three years since the premiere of Warcraft and we're nowhere close to seeing a sequel. Although the failed trilogy based on the Blizzard game is never happening at this point, director Duncan Jones has confirmed that the follow-up to the 2016 film would have focused on the battle between Durotan's son Go'el and the villainous Gul'dan.

Jones recently spoke to Collider about the 4K release of his film Moon in celebration of its tenth year anniversary and the director was somehow asked what could have happened in the Warcraft sequel. Here's what Jones had to say about the possible storyline for the trilogy:

"For me, the story was about Gul'dan and taking the false walls. The symbol or the tribe that he was the chief of, taking them away from the world that was dying on setting them up with a new home on this planet of Azeroth. And, really that was going to happen through his baby son who, for those who are lore junkies, was getting to grow up to be this character called Thrall. So really it was about that story and everything else was how the orcs left their home world and clear that new home for themselves in Azeroth. That was the three-film arc I would've wanted to follow up," he said.

The introduction of Thrall was certainly teased in Warcraft when Go'el was found by a human. It's a story that Jones truly wanted to pursue and there is little doubt that he is still heartbroken about the backlash the first film was dealt with.

"It really would have been pretty special," Jones said. "It's unfortunate now, you gotta try and go with your [heart] on these things. I made the film as best I could ... hoping that it would connect with an audience. I genuinely think that in retrospect and as time has moved on, people are starting to appreciate the film [more] than maybe the critics did when it first came out. But, unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to make any more."

While Warcraft never worked out, Jones has certainly moved forward. His most recent film Mute was released in 2018 and he is currently working on a Rogue Trooper movie.

The Moon 4K remastered version is now available.
