Dragon Ball Super: Broly Teases Major Change to Broly's Origin

Dragon Ball Super: Broly promises to make Broly canon this winter, and it looks like the popular anime franchise is about to shake up the villain's origins in the upcoming film.

Thanks to the recent New York Comic-Con panel, the new Dragon ball Super: Broly trailer got a lot of fans more hyped as it revealed more footage of the Saiyans' past on Planet Vegeta, but it looks like Broly's past is getting a big change.

As the trailer shows, King Vegeta will make a different decision about Broly than he did in Dragon Ball Z: Broly — The Legendary Super Saiyan. In the non-canon film, the Saiyan king decided he would execute Broly because he saw him as a threat, so he originally planned to get rid of Broly and his father.

However, the new Dragon Ball Super: Broly trailer shows a different take on Broly's origin. In this version, Broly is exiled from Planet Vegeta and sent to scout a different planet instead of being sentenced to death. The trailer suggests that Broly's father, Paragus, would follow his son, and this decision would save them from the destruction of Planet Vegeta soon after, making the pair two of the last remaining Saiyans.

The trailer also shows little Broly eating rations from his escape pod, and it appears that he's along without Paragus taking care of him. This made fans speculate that Broly may have grown up on a different planet but without the guidance of a good figure like Grandpa Gohan was for Goku.

Synopsis:

This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Goku spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Goku and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called 'Broly' who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between the three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix.

Dragon Ball Super is available for streaming on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami still airs the English dub of Dragon Ball Super on Adult Swim Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. It's also available to stream on FunimationNOW and Amazon. The upcoming Dragon Ball Super film will be released in Japan on December 14 and Funimation will release it in North America sometime in January 2019.
