Doug Jones Turned Down Abe Sapien Cameo In Hellboy Reboot

If there's one thing that the Hellboy reboot will be missing, it's the return of fan favorite Abe Sapien. Interestingly, the David Harbour film was supposed to feature a cameo from Red's old pal from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. However, Doug Jones turned down the idea for a very simple reason.

Jones, who also played two other characters in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the 2019 film. The Star Trek: Discovery actor confirmed he had a lot to do when he was approached about returning to the franchise. In addition to that, Jones implied he wasn't ready to do so without his old friends from the first two films.

"Reboot means recasting, and I'm told this first reboot does not have anybody in it from the original film. I received an offer to do a cameo, but I was deeply immersed in Star Trek: Discovery when that offer came in, so I couldn't do it," he said.

It's certainly sad to know that Abe Sapien won't be a part of the new Hellboy movie. After all, the amphibious man already had a great story arc that evolved in the first two Guillermo del Toro films. Nevertheless, fans have joked that Jones' The Shape of Water somehow served as the natural development for Abe's story.

The reboot will star Harbour as Hellboy, Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimo.

Hellboy will premiere on April 12.
