Is Dream Sweet a Real K-Pop Group?

During a special press conference for Doona!'s premiere, Netflix released the music video of the song, Sweet Dream. The song was performed by Dream Sweet, a girl group that Bae Suzy's character in the show is part of.

Unfortunately, Dream Sweet is not a real group. It is a fictional group created for the show.

The members of the group include other talented K-Pop idols like Rian, Simeez, Janet Suhh, and Go Ah-sung. Rian and Simeez are both members of a dance crew called La Chica. Meanwhile, Janet Suhh is a singer.

The music video shows a believable camaraderie between the girls, which is why it's easy to see people wondering if the group is real. Not to mention, the appearance of these girls were a good surprise for those who saw the music video.

Bonus trivia: the five girls also sang the song themselves. Doona's scenes as an idol are authentic since they were filmed at a pre-show event at KCON Japan in October 2022.

Is Doona! Based on a True Story?

Doona! is a Kdrama that was adapted from a webtoon called The Girl Downstairs. Even though both the show and webtoon are fictional, the story reminded Bae Suzy of her time as a K-Pop idol.

The show follows the story of a K-Pop idol who abruptly quit the group just as she was at the peak of her career. She hides in a sharehouse where she rooms with a guileless college freshmen, Lee Won-jun (played by Yang Se-jong)

In real life, Suzy can't help but recall her own experience from her former group, Miss A.

"It's been a long time since I've sung and danced onstage, so those scenes in Doona! brought back fond memories."

She also shared that she went through the same anxieties that her character had.

“There were moments when I was struggling, but I ignored them and still tried to be a bright and bubbly person. But Doona is different. She will let herself feel the pain and I quite admire that.”

Suzy was part of the group from 2010 to 2017 when they disbanded.

On this note, it's important to point out not to compare Suzy with her character, Doo-na. While they share some experiences as an idol, they are two different personalities.

Doo-na is a smoker and swears quite a lot. She is also incredibly rude to her housemate at the start of the series.

Suzy, who is called the "Nation's First Love," is far from this personality. Despite this, she shared that she did not have any problems switching her image for the show:

“It was exhilarating for me. Director Lee was concerned because I had a lot of smoking scenes, but when I’m choosing a project, I think about showing a new side of me, so I was actually quite excited. Cigarettes are one of the key things that define Doona.”

Smoker or not, she's still the same Bae Suzy that her fans admire. You can now watch Doona! on Netflix.
