Don Cheadle Teases 'Rebirth' for War Machine in Upcoming Projects

Don Cheadle's James Rhodes has been a mainstay in the MCU since 2010 and, despite Tony Stark's death at the end of Avengers: Endgame, he still continued to have a major presence in the franchise with appearances such as in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and upcoming projects such as Secret Invasion and Armor Wars, where he is set as the lead.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor discussed the future of his character in the MCU where he teased that Rhodey will have a "rebirth" in the upcoming projects as they now have an opportunity to deep dive even further with the character, especially in Armor Wars.

"Who is Rhodey? Where did he come from? What are the relationships? Who’s important to him? Who is he important to? What does he want to do? What are his goals? What are his desires outside of the relationship with these people that we’ve seen? Who is he when he’s by himself?," Cheadle said.

"A lot of these things we haven’t seen before, so there’s like I said, a good opportunity to explore all that stuff and hopefully create a full character that now, when we see the suit, we see everything else, we know what’s behind that."

He added, "It’s a rebirth in a way, you know? It’s coming back to this character but we’ve never gone to the places that we’re about to go to in the show. So, I feel like we’re, in some ways, just getting to know him even after all this time."

The actor also noted that his upcoming projects will give him an opportunity for Rhodey to be more "three-dimensional" since he is no longer closely tied to Tony Stark and the Avengers in general.

"That’s the hope, is that he gets to be more three-dimensional and, you know, things that we like, don’t like, his desires, his fears, all the things that I think we’ve only cursorily looked at as Rhodey. He’s always sort of existed in the context of, you know, Tony, and the MCU, and his job as an Avenger. But really, like sort of, peel all that back and really get to know what it is,' he said.

It is exciting to see that Rhodey will finally get his due since we really never got an opportunity to see more of the character in his past MCU appearances and having a solo project of his own like Armor Wars will be a wonderful chance for him to really sink his teeth into his character as we've never seen before.
