Some might think that Oshi no Ko only focuses on the idol life of Ai Hoshino, so they did not expect the surprising turn of events in the first episode. But does Ai come back in Oshi no Ko? Or will she simply live on in the hearts and memories of her children?

What Happened to Ai Hoshino?
Ai Hoshino is a well-loved idol and the face of the popular idol group, B-Komachi.
She had an abusive past because of her mother and had no experience with true love.
But this did not stop her from becoming an idol as Ichigo Saitou convinced her that she could still lie to show love for her fans.
Her career was going well until she got pregnant at 16.
She gave birth to twins, Aquamarine and Ruby, but decided to hide this fact from the world to keep her career.
She then returned to the industry after she gave birth.
By age 20, one of her fans found out about her secret and decided to murder her as he believed that Ai betrayed her fans.
Her son, Aquamarine Hoshino, suspected his biological father of being the person behind his mother's murder.
He vowed to himself that he would do everything he could to discover the truth, even if it meant entering the entertainment industry.
He also tried to protect his sister, Ruby, from following their mother’s footsteps, but Ruby decided to become an idol under Strawberry Productions.

Did Ai Come Back as Akane?
In Episode 7 of Oshi no Ko, Akane decided to act as Aqua's ideal girl. Akane studied Ai Hoshino thanks to Aqua's vague yet very specific description of his dream girl.
Aqua was confident that no one could ever replace Ai. But what surprised him was that Akane, being the great actress that she is, mimicked Ai's tone and movements, even her starry eyes!
Does this mean that Ai came back as Akane? Sadly, no. As mentioned, Akane researched Ai's life to learn about her tone, movements, and even her personality.
But that does not mean that she is the new Ai Hoshino. Even more so, can Akane keep up with her chosen persona?

Does Ai Come Back in Oshi no Ko?
Sadly, Ai Hoshino does not come back in Oshi no Ko.
Some fans were hoping that she would miraculously survive the attack and come back to seek revenge (which would make a good plot twist by the way).
But avenging her would be done by someone else.
Some thought Ai will be back in the series because many believe that her attack was based on real events.
Specifically, in 2016, Mayu Tomita, a popular Japanese pop star, was stabbed multiple times by a man obsessed with her.
She survived the attack, but the same could not be said for Ai.
Ai Hoshino might not be seen in the anime anymore, but the story will still revolve around how Aqua will investigate (and avenge) her death.
