Doctor Who: Why Steven Moffat Never Cast A Female Doctor

Steven Moffat's run as the showrunner for Doctor Who is coming to an end, with Chris Chibnall taking his position and making the choice to cast the first female Doctor. Reaction to the news has been mostly positive, though it has made some fans wonder why Moffat never cast a female Doctor during his tenure. Now that he's no longer involved in the series, Moffat has revealed why he never did this and the results are a bit troubling, to say the least.

Talking to Radio Times, Moffat said that he didn't cast a female Doctor because the show "isn't exclusively for progressive liberals." He claimed that the show was for everyone, even those who voted for Brexit, which is a troubling notion, to say the least. While he claims that he doesn't lean that way politically, it has made fans wonder if he has problems with women.

"This isn't a show exclusively for progressive liberals; this is also for people who voted Brexit. That's not me politically at all – but we have to keep everyone on board."

While there isn't anything wrong with making shows that can entertain both sides of the political spectrum, it's odd that he said "we have to keep everyone on board," and thinks none of those people are women. Furthermore, he basically contradicts his statement by saying that it's time for a female Doctor and that the world is ready for it.

"All credit to [Chris Chibnall]. It's going to work, I know it is. More and more of the audience were asking for it. It's is absolutely the right choice. Now is the time."

Moffatt's refusal to make the Doctor a woman has always been controversial and it's easy to see why. Though his leaving has gotten a mixed reaction, a number of fans feel that the new female Doctor and showrunner could make the show feel fresh again.

Jodie Whittaker will take over Peter Capaldi as the 13th Doctor in Doctor Who, though no timetable for her debut has been announced.
