Doctor Who to Introduce First Transgender Companion

It took a long time but we finally have a female Doctor. Now, Doctor Who is taking it one step further by introducing the first transgender Companion.

Rebecca Root is known for being the first transgender actor to lead a sitcom, which is Boy Meets Girl. Not surprisingly, Root will once again make history by playing the first transgender Companion in the audio drama Doctor Who: Stranded.

Root, who will play Tania Bell in the audio drama, recently spoke to Nerdist where she shared some details about her character.

"She's a person like all the other people I have played and hope to play in the future," Root said. "She's not perfect, but she's not a mess, and certainly, I don't think her gender identity has any influence on her behavior in the story."

Not surprisingly, Root is proud of her new role, which she believes could lead to fellow transgender people being represented properly after several years of being disregarded.

"It would have been amazing to see a Trans person in a show like Doctor Who. In fact, to see a Trans person period would have been amazing," she said.

The audio drama will also star McGann as the Eighth Doctor, Hattie Morahan as Helen Sinclair, Nicola Walker as Liv Chenka, and Tom Price as Sergeant Andy Davidson. The synopsis reads as follows:

"The TARDIS is gone. Stranded in one time and place, the Doctor, Liv and Helen seek refuge in Baker Street. But the house has changed: they now have neighbours – not all of them welcoming. And someone has a dire warning for the future. The Doctor and friends face their greatest challenge yet: living one day after another, in 2020 London."
Doctor Who: Stranded will be available in July.
