Doctor Who Star Mandip Gill Reveals Why Yaz Isn't Leaving After Holiday Special

There is little doubt that Whovians are still shocked over the news that Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole are leaving after the Doctor Who Holiday Special. However, it looks like at least one Companion of the Thirteenth Doctor will be sticking around longer. So why exactly is Yaz staying behind? Mandip Gill has addressed her character's story arc in the upcoming season.

Gill recently spoke to Radio Times where she admitted that she wasn't happy about seeing fellow Companions Ryan and Graham leaving the series. However, she also pointed out that Yaz's story is far from over.

"I just thought, ‘I'm not ready for this journey to end,'" Gill said. "Why leave something if you're enjoying it, it's working and there's development?"

She continued that there is still so much about Yaz that needs to be learned. "I don't know when it will end for me because as a person and as a character, there's so much more to explore," Gill said.

But what can fans expect of Yaz now that she's confirmed to continue being the Doctor's Companion? Gill pointed out that viewers may learn a bit more about the character's backstory.

"We started to see Yaz with her mental health storyline the last series, and started to see Yaz a little bit more," she said. "So that can sort of being explored a little bit further – there's room now to explore that. It never probably felt like the right time to do it before. So I'm looking forward to it."

We're happy to know that Jodie Whittaker's Doctor will still have one loyal Companion we already know and love in the upcoming season of Doctor Who.

The Doctor Who Holiday Special is titled Revolution of the Daleks. It is scheduled to air on BBC on New Year's Day.
