Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker Hypes Up Regeneration Scene in Upcoming Special

It has already been confirmed that Jodie Whittaker is stepping down as the Thirteenth Doctor but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing more of her this year. After all, the Time Lord has yet to regenerate into her latest incarnation. Interestingly, Whittaker has admitted that she already shot her regeneration scene in the third Doctor Who Special later this year and the Broadchurch star couldn't help but hype up the awesome sequence!

Whovians were initially wondering whether the Thirteenth Doctor will immediately regenerate in the Doctor Who New Year's Day Special. However, Eve of the Daleks concluded without a regeneration sequence.

Although it didn't happen just yet, that doesn't mean it isn't happening in the future. Jodie Whittaker told Entertainment Weekly she had already filmed her regeneration scene and hyped up the entire sequence.

"I've shot my version of regen, and it was singularly the most emotional day on set I think I've ever had," Whittaker said. "It's a really bizarre feeling because it's the best time I've ever had on a job, and I made the decision to leave it, so it's a really strange thing to do to yourself."

She continued by pointing out the scene felt truly special because of what it represented.

"It feels like you're giving yourself stitches — like, 'Why have you done it?' But… it felt right....It was a wonderfully-celebratory-slash-grief-ridden day that I could spend with the family that I'd made," Whittaker stated.

But can she say anything about the next Doctor? Whittaker chose to focus on what else is happening this year. "I suppose the best thing about it is that the episodes are still on," she said in reference to the next two Doctor Who Specials. "So until they're off, I don't have to really get my head around the fact that it's not my part!"

Whittaker will return in the second Doctor Who Special titled Legend of the Sea Devils in the first half of 2022. Her final appearance as the Time Lord will be in the still-untitled third Special which will air later this year.
