Doctor Who: Christopher Eccleston Finally Returns as Ninth Doctor in New Audio Series

It's no secret that Christopher Eccleston is not in good terms with BBC and this led to his early departure from Doctor Who. However, it looks like the Thor: The Dark World actor is finally ready to return as the Ninth Doctor. Big Finish has just confirmed that Eccleston has signed on to reprise the role in a new audio series.

The announcement was made by Big Finish Productions, who revealed that Eccleston will be working on a series of 12 full-cast audio adventures. These adventures will be released in four box sets with the first one being released in early 2021.

Eccleston expressed his excitement about returning to the role. "After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor's world, bringing back to life a character I love playing," he said in a statement.

Although it's all a big surprise, Big Finish Chairman Jason Heigh-Ellery revealed that they have been working on bringing Eccleston for some time now.

"I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at a fan convention in February this year. Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly. I am so pleased that Christopher has decided to return to the role with us – and I'm excited to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor," Heigh-Ellery said.

The first volume of the Ninth Doctor's audio box sets is currently available for pre-order on the Big Finish website and will be released in May 2021.
