Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson Says There’s an Upside to All the Marvel Delays

Marvel fans might be frustrated that they won't get to see Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) fight alongside her Russian family in Black Widow next month, but Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson believes that the Marvel film delays may actually benefit the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the long run.

Last month, as the coronavirus pandemic forced people to stay at home and self-quarantine, Disney had to delay the release of major films like Mulan and Black Widow. This week, Disney unveiled its updated release schedule for its films. Turns out that other Marvel films like The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had also been pushed back because of COVID-19.

While most Marvel fans are frustrated that the novel coronavirus has been delaying highly anticipated films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Scott Derrickson says that the delayed Marvel slate may actually benefit the MCU.

"The pushing of all these big tentpole release dates will increase their overall quality — more time for script & production design development. Blade Runner looks so amazing because Ridley Scott & his team took a year during the 80-81 actors & WGA strikes to perfect the visuals," the filmmaker wrote on a post on Twitter.

That's a pretty optimistic way of seeing the Marvel film delays. Hopefully, it'll give movies more time for development. Guess fans will just have to be patient. Good things take time.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to premiere on May 5, 2021.
