Do Nina and Matthias End Up Together in Shadow and Bone?
As of Shadow and Bone Season 2, Nina and Matthias haven't ended up together, although their scenes together set the foundation for a future reunion.
Nina and Matthias' paths first crossed when Nina wandered into Matthias' Fjerdan Drüskelle (holy soldiers who hunt Grisha) camp.
The Drüskelle, led by Jarl Brum, capture Nina and take her with them to stand trial as a witch.
When the ship where Nina was held went into a massive storm, Nina and Matthias were stranded together far from either their homes.
They were deeply suspicious of each other as their people had historically been enemies and had been doing horrible things to each other.
However, their chemistry and attraction was also apparent even then. During their time together, Nina saved Matthias life using her Heartrender abilities.
In the weeks that followed, the two came close despite her bickering, with Matthias returning the favor and saving Nina's life.
In the series, the two started a romantic relationship, which is, however, cut short when Grisha showed up.
While Nina knew that the Grisha could rescue her, she also knew that they would capture Matthias and most likely execute them no matter what she told them.
To save him, she did the unthinkable, telling a Kerch trader that Matthias is a slaver who captured her, knowing that the Kerch would take him away to stand trial and imprison him, but not kill him.
Throughout Season 2, Nina's main motivation is to obtain a pardon for Matthias, but when she achieves that it's already too late.
Pekka Rollins, who now runs the prison despite being an inmate, sees her and orders the guards to take her away.
Nina is unable to use the pardon and, by the Shadow and Bone Season 2's ending, Matthias is still a prisoner.
Do Nina and Matthias End Up Together in the Grishaverse books?
If you don't mind Grishaverse book spoilers, you might be pleased to know that Nina and Matthias have many more scenes together and even pursue a romantic relationship though they sadly do not get their happily ever after.
In the Six of Crows book -- which will hopefully be covered in a Crows spin-off or in Shadow and Bone Season 3 -- the Crows must sneak into a high-security prison in Fjerda, Matthias' homeland.
To gain access, the group needs a Fjerdan and Kaz sneaks Matthias out of prison before forcing him to participate in the plan.
For much of the book, Matthias cannot forgive Nina and refuses to understand why she got his captured.
Eventually, both give in to their feelings and start a romantic relationship. However, Matthias dies at the hand of a young Drüskelle who doesn't comprehend why Matthias is helping a Grisha.
Nina does get her happy ending in the next duology, King of Scars where she ends up in a very cute queer relationship, and, though we're here for that, Matthias was missed.
