While fans will agree that Attack on Titan’s genre does not include romance or any emotion similar to it, Eren and Mikasa’s relationship has been anticipated by the series’ fans. Since the beginning, it has been established that the two have a special bond that they will never have with anybody else. Eren and Mikasa have gone through a lot together, especially after he saved her from the kidnappers when they were kids.

Things were not easy for the two of them after that incident but they stuck together no matter what. The two obviously have feelings for each other, even if Eren tried to detach himself from her because of his trauma and goals in life. But in the end, were they able to express their true feelings and finally be together?

As mentioned, romance was not really the focus of the anime even if the series heavily emphasized that Mikasa has feelings for Eren, and there were various instances wherein Eren showed his feelings towards her. Eren’s priority was not to get into a relationship, and Mikasa just wanted to protect and support him no matter what happens.

Eren reached the point where he had to tell her he hated her so that she will be safe. He had to completely detach himself from her and Armin so he can proceed with his plan, which is to make himself the villain and trigger the Rumbling. His statement hurt her but this did not stop Mikasa from protecting him.

While Eren showed signs that he loves her too, he never said it out loud. The only time he did this was when he and Armin met in a memory. He explained his plan all along and confessed that he loves Mikasa. He even had a jealousy outburst that he did not want her to be with another man. He wanted to keep his feelings a secret and made Armin promise not to let Mikasa know.

To make things even sadder, it was Mikasa who killed Eren to stop the Rumbling. She finally understood his plan and kissed him when he died. Their love story was truly tragic but it was something that fans might have expected, considering the progression and concept of Attack on Titan.
