Disney is developing a live-action fairytale movie called "Sadé," which is about an African princess, and Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is set to produce the film.
As Variety reports, Disney bought a pitch from Lindsey Reed Palmer and Ola Shokunbi, who will also serve as co-writers for the screenplay of the film, which is about an African girl named Sadé whose kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil entity and accepts her discovered magical powers to protect her people, with the help of the kingdom's prince.
The premise reminds me of Moana a bit, and there's more to the story than what was revealed so far. Disney hasn't announced a director for the film yet.
Earlier this year, Disney saw great success with Marvel's Black Panther, set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda. The film grossed $1.35 billion, and it's the third-highest domestic performer of all time at $700 million. I could imagine that its success paved the way for Sadé to be made.
