Disney Files Patent For New Retractable Lightsaber

Disney/Lucasfilm

The Walt Disney Company has filed for another patent, and this time, it's for a new lightsaber toy that's described as " "Sword Device with Retractable, Internally Illuminated Blade."

It looks like this is going to be the most realistic lightsaber yet. The lightsaber's hilt will have mechanics that work like a motorized tape measure. According to WDWNT, with the press of the button, "the tapes will extend to a total length several times that of the hilt itself. The tapes will also have some kind of LED lighting inside, such that the lightsaber can light up similar to the way they appear in the films."

The description says that the same mechanics used to eject the blade will also be used to retract it. "The LEDs will be affixed to a tape that retracts onto a spool as the lightsaber blade retracts."

WDWNT went on to explain that the new lightsaber will most likely be a collector's item rather than a toy for kids, and it will likely command a high price.

The new lightsabers will most likely be made available at the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge attraction currently under construction in Disney parks.
