Mary Poppins will be back on the big screen with a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns.

Walt Disney Pictures made the official announcement of the sequel today, including the film's cast and release date. Mary Poppins Returns will star Hamilton creator-star Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as The Huntsman: Winter's War actress Emily Blunt. The movie is slated for release on December 25, 2018.

Blunt will be playing the playful nanny, while Miranda will be playing a new character named Jack, who's also a lamplighter.

Reports of talks between Miranda, Blunt, and the media giant began earlier this year.

To be helmed and co-produced by Rob Marshall, Mary Poppins Returns' producers also include John DeLuca, and Marc Platt. David Magee is working on the screenplay based on P.L. Travers' The Mary Poppins Stories. Meanwhile, new original songs are scored by Marc Shaiman and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman. Marc Shaiman.

The new movie comes almost sixty years after Julie Andrews played the title character during the 1964 classic. The sequel takes place during Depression-era London with Jane and Michael Banks all grown-up. They are visited by Poppins after they lose someone of significance in their lives. She and her friend Jack will help the family see the joy and wonders of life despite tragedy.

In a statement, Marshall said:

I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers' further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.

Blunt already has experience working with Marshall in the hit big-screen adaptation of the musical Into the Woods. While Miranda hasn't worked with Blunt and Marshall, he did write the music for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He's also currently working on composing songs for Disney's upcoming animated film Moana.

It looks like Disney has picked its cast and crew well for Mary Poppins Returns. With their experience in the industry, it's highly likely that the movie will turn out a big hit just like the 1964 Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
