Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan admits that he knows how the story will end. Outlander Season 6 was released on Mar. 6 across all Starz platforms, as announced in November of last year. The historical drama will return with an expanded episode on the same day and date in the UK via STARZPLAY.

Given that the last season of Outlander aired in May 2020, it will have been over two years since fans last saw Claire and Jamie. Heughan, however, already knows how everything will end.

Diana Gabaldon Has Told Sam Heughan How Outlander Ends

For the past two decades, author Diana Gabaldon has known the ending to Jamie and Claire's narrative. However, she only began writing the 10th and last book last year. She hasn't finished the book yet. However, Heughan claims Gabaldon has told him how the main Outlander series ends.

“I know how it ends, Diana has told me, but we still have a long way to go before we get to that,” Heughan told The Tonight Show.

Each season is loosely based on the corresponding novel, as fans are aware. Outlander Season 6 is based on the sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. If the one book each season plan is followed, there will be a total of 10 seasons of Outlander before the finale. But, as Heughan points out, we'll have to wait a bit to get there.

Jamie's ghost, who hasn't been seen since the pilot episode, will return at the end of the story, according to Gabaldon. She also promises a lot of crying. She further says that the plot will wrap up in the year 1800.

“The last book will have a happy ending, though I confidently expect it to leave the readers in floods of tears, anyway,” Gabaldon wrote on her website.

Outlander Will Continue With More Episodes

Heughan does sound hopeful about the possibility of Outlander continuing for a long time, mirroring his co-star Caitriona Balfe's sentiments. Though the Claire Randall actor stated that she is unsure whether the drama will return for an eighth installment, she added that it would take a full 10 years to tell the entire story in a fashion that would reflect the books.

The fact that Starz has announced a prequel series is perhaps a promising sign for the future of Outlander, and given that the adaption remains one of the network's most popular programs overall, chances are good that fans will be able to see the intended farewell for Claire and Jamie.

Nonetheless, following a time-travel twist in the previous season involving Bree (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin), there have been new questions about whether the adaptation should stray even further from the source material. This could allow the series to reach its conclusion on its own terms, rather than having to stick to Gabaldon's books, which just released their ninth volume. For the time being, fans can expect at least a few more seasons of Outlander.
