Deadpool Co-Writer Gives Update on DP’s Future in the MCU

Deadpool was probably one of the only successful Marvel Fox properties, and the franchise was gearing for an X-Force film before Disney bought Fox and put everything on hold. We don't know exactly how the franchise plans for proceeding into the future, but Deadpool co-writer Paul Wernick has given us an update on DP's MCU status.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Wernick explains:

"We're always in touch with Ryan [Reynolds]… We've got several projects with him in addition to the Deadpool universe. I think the party line and truth is we're all still figuring it out. Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU a little bit as well and play in that sandbox. Our feeling and Ryan's feeling is that it's got to be the right idea, it's got to be great… I think once we collectively agree what idea that great idea is we'll be off to the races. Ryan's super-busy, we've got a lot of projects lined up, but we wake up thinking about Deadpool, and we go to sleep thinking about Deadpool."

While I think keeping Deadpool in his own world is the safe choice, I think it would ultimately be better if they found a way to bring this character into the MCU. As for keeping his R-rated brand, some speculate that Marvel should just make a new label that will focus more on R-rated material; still related to the MCU, but not as family-friendly.

My suggestion is to have Deadpool be brought into the MCU via a multiverse door by Doctor Strange, then he could stay in that world saying that he can't come back to his because "the studio canceled it." This way still makes both DP movies relevant, and we get to have a meta explanation as to why Reynolds is still the same version we have.

Then again, this is just me spit-balling. Hopefully, someone in Marvel Studios has the right idea in bringing Deadpool to their world.

For now, catch Wernick's next film, Zombieland: Double Tap which comes out Oct. 18.
