Deadpool 3 Writers Praise Disney for Being 'Very Supportive' on Its R-Rated Tone

We know for a while now that Marvel Studios has started working on Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds expected to reprise the role of the wisecracking mercenary and Shawn Levy tapped to direct after working with the actor in his last two films. There are fans who are concerned about the film's tone since it is now being made under the Disney umbrella. However, it looks like we shouldn't worry about it at all.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter recently, Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick assured that the film is still going to be R-rated in tone despite being in the MCU and also revealed that Disney has been "very supportive" about their process even though it's not in their usual family-friendly tone.

"It’s a thrill," Reese said. "It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming — Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to."

"Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool," Wernick assured. Reese continued on by saying that the studio has been supportive of their plans on keeping the film's R-rated tone and is hopeful that their working relationship so far will continue as they are developing the project.

"They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke,'" Reese said. "But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel."

It is great to hear that Disney is being supportive of the writing team's process in Deadpool 3. The character is one of the few ones in the Marvel library that would benefit from an R-rated tone rather than the PG-13 tone that the MCU films have so far. It looks like it will continue throughout the development and Kevin Feige will make sure that the film will remain R-rated despite being part of Disney and find a way to make it work with the PG-13 tone of the MCU.
