Deadpool 2: Zazie Beetz Talks About Domino's Unshaven Armpits

The role of Domino in Deadpool 2 had already sparked debate when they cast African-American actress Zazie Beetz in the role of an abnormally white character in the comics. What some people also forget to notice was that Domino's armpits remained unshaven in the film. Beetz talks a little about that creative choice for the character.

Talking to Independent, Beetz explains why she decided to embrace her armpit hair for Domino. She explains:

"Before we started shooting I actually hadn't shaved in a bit, just out of… not even having gotten to it. And my boyfriend, if I remember correctly, he was like, ‘Maybe you should keep it'. And I was like, ‘You know what?' That's kind of a good idea.' So I just kept it. And then I sort of tentatively brought it up. Well, not really tentatively, I brought it up."

Oddly enough, there hasn't been that much (visible) controversy surrounding Beetz's choice. In fact, it wasn't anything like the complainers for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman who some insist should have armpit hair.

When it came to people who did hate the hair, Beetz had this to say:

"It's interesting how strongly people really do feel about armpit hair on women… They have very, very strong opinions about that. But I felt, you know, like that's not about me, right?"

That's about social conditioning and about people's perception of what women should look like. And, you know, I felt if people got offended by that, that's not something I really have to worry about."

I, for one, was completely clueless about all of this until I saw the film again, and noticed the hair when Domino dropped onto the inflatable panda. Though Domino's pits remain unshaven, it's honestly not so noticeable in the film—save for some shots where we really get a good look at them. Heck, the armpit hair was even on the posters.

Deadpool 2 is now available on digital.
