Deadpool 2 Star Brianna Hildebrand Shares How Negasonic And Yukio Helped One Fan Come Out

Deadpool 2 won praises from the LGBTQ community when the sequel re-introduced Negasonic Teenage Warhead as the first openly gay superhero complete with an adorable girlfriend Yukio. Not surprisingly, actress Brianna Hildebrand is proud of how the film affected new members of the community.

Hildebrand recently spoke to Red Carpet News TV about how Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool 2 writers approached her about her character's storyline. The actress even shared that a fan had reached out to her to express their gratitude for the representation.

"Each person that's come up to me expressing how important Negasonic is to them has been an individual story that's been really special," Hildebrand said. "One girl, in particular, told me that after she saw [Deadpool 2] and [saw] Negasonic and Yukio together, that she came out to her dad, which I thought was super cool and really nice."

Negasonic and Yukio's relationship in the film certainly had a positive effect on most fans. Hildebrand, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, related that her own childhood would have been different if she saw representation on the big screen.

"Maybe if I, growing up, had seen an openly gay or queer character as a superhero, maybe I would have come out sooner, or maybe I would have felt more empowered about the things that I am able to do and more comfortable in my own skin. I think those things are really important. And it's something I didn't really realize was important before I actually started coming to these conventions and realizing how much superheroes really affect people who feel vulnerable, people of all types. I think it's really important to have that kind of representation."

Negasonic Teenage Warhead might be the first openly gay superhero on the big screen but hopefully, she won't be the last. Fans are hoping both Negasonic and Yukio will return in X-Force as well as the third Deadpool film.

The Deadpool 2 DVD and Blu-ray will be released on August 21.
