Deadpool 2: Chinese TV Spot Confirms Russell is from the Comics

A lot of people were wondering which character Julian Dennison's Russell was when he was presented in the Deadpool 2 trailer, but gave up guessing when a TV spot showcased him as "Hot Stuff." Now a Chinese teaser has come out confirming that Russell is in fact Firefist from the comics.

Check it out:

Firefist was everyone's best guess when it was first revealed that Dennison's character was named ‘Russell.' In the comics, Russell "Rusty" Collins was a mutant who could control fire and debuted in X-Factor #1. Since then, he's been jumping around from groups like New Mutants and the Mutant Liberation Front.

With such a rich bank of comic characters, I thought it would have been weird for Deadpool 2 to go so far as to create a new character for the movie. I mean, they don't even have to be incredibly faithful to the comics. Negasonic Teenage Warhead doesn't share the same powers as the comic version does, yet everyone still loves her.

At best, I think the "Hot Stuff" mantle will be something Deadpool comes up with after Russell tells him his alter ego is Firefist. I guess I have no issue with either name; I'm just happy whatever name gets the most jokes milked from it.

Deadpool 2 hits theaters May 18.
